United Systems Coalition Remnants Fic-bgrb

Formal Name: United Systems Coalition
Informal Names: 'filthy capitalists', 'the Coalition'
Abbreviation: USC
Population:
~187,000,000 (Human)
-150,000,000: Europa
- 37,000,000: XE-52
~891,000,000 (Nasari)

Nuclear Physics: The United Systems, the 'successor' of a large chunk of NATO's most powerful countries, inherited the former's obsession with nuclear physics. These include anything and everything to do with the physics of nuclear reactions, particularly the harnessing of their power to produce useful work. It was that very unhealthy obsession with the nucleus of the atom that allowed the Coalition to continue its offensive operations long after Helium-3 reserves had gone critical.

Automation: Computers are the very basis on which the United Systems functions. Artificial intelligence manages many aspects of USC society in the form of the Integrated Hypercomputing Network, a collection of self-sustainable quantum computer farms that crunch through billions of hexabytes of data every second and make intelligent decisions about everything from traffic control, to disaster management to aerospace defense. Smaller computing clusters provide automation to civilian ships, military warships or even unmanned robotic soldiers. Since the end of the Second War, with much of the Coalition's population decimated, the bulk of the Coalition's infantry consists of combat robots.

Macroscale Construction: Many have jokingly claimed that the USC's designs are compensating for something, but the fact remains that the Coalition builds everything big. Frigates and destroyers, despite their significant strategic advantage when patrolling large swaths of territory, were almost non-existent in the USC's military before the Second War. Such wonders of construction included gargantuan particle accelerators, city-sized server farms and freighters that many times outsized the capital warships of other nations. Or, for the more military minded, ten-story-tall mechs and house-sized tanks. With its economical collapse following the fuel wars, the United Systems lost its complex logistics and manufacturing network, and has been forced to remove older weapon systems from mothball storage to keep up.

Projectile Warfare: Although the USC was always known for its convoluted, unnecessarily complicated solutions to everyday problems, space combat was one area where its obsession with its own unique mix of simplicity and complexity came useful. Foregoing almost all investment into laser weapon systems, save for point defense, the Coalition developed some of the most powerful conventional weapons systems in the quadrant. Missiles were its crown jewel: often equipped with nuclear-tipped warheads, Coalition missiles were one of the decisive factors that allowed the USC to hold its ground during most of the war, followed by its powerful, if not excessively massive, railguns.

Electronic Warfare: Although the Coalition's powerful computing network was sufficient to grant it an advantage in countering electronic warfare, the Second War served as a powerful jolt to the EWAR industry. Unable to defeat the combined forces of the Kal'bavakorians and the New Terrans in direct battle, the Coalition dedicated much of its research efforts on crushing enemy computer networks, leaving entire fighter squadrons derelict and vulnerable to attack. By the end of the war, the Coalition's forces had become notorious for exploiting the tiniest of backdoors and software bugs to gain an edge in battle.

Species: Humans, mostly settlers from America, Europe, Israel and the Commonwealth, but with a significant Turkish, Slavic, Korean and Japanese minority. Although the Coalition's population had been heavily genetically modified in the centuries since the Alarei Wars, it was the Second War that gave the transhumanism movement enough momentum to become common. Cybernetic implants and retroviral genetic modification became common in the population, and the military provided incentives for its troops to accept the new enhancements.

Homeworld Name: 'Oscar', XE-52
Homeworld Location: A-02
Homeworld Description: XE-52 is an aquatic world, with over 90% of its surface covered by ocean; swamps occupy the remaining landmass, making the planet a very unconventional fallback position for the United Systems government.

At twice the Earth's mass and one point three times its radius, the planet has an average surface gravity of approximately 1.1g. A strong magnetic field interferes with electronic systems and transmissions alike, and it is these two facts, a powerful gravity field and the presence of a magnetic shield, that allow XE-52 to maintain its thick atmosphere. The atmosphere, with a pressure of 1.8 atmospheres at sea level, is composed mainly of nitrogen (81%), oxygen (6%), carbon dioxide (5%), sulfur (3%), carbon monoxide (2%), chlorine (1%), xenon (1%) and various other trace gasses (1%). Although the atmosphere is toxic to human life due to the high partial pressure of carbon monoxide, a respirator is sufficient protection to move in the swamplands.

With atmosphere humidity almost constantly at 90+%, the sun is almost constantly blocked by clouds. Sulfuric acid rain is a very common phenomenon as atmospheric sulfur is converted into the corrosive chemical, raining down with regular water and destroying plant life that has not adapted to the acidity. The rain is also very inflammatory, and exposed skin during a rainstorm can develop blisters and rashes after less than half an hour.

Although the planet was once occupied by a very advanced civilization of crustacean beings, they went extinct millions of years ago and only their robotic servants remained to take care of their ancient cities. With the Coalition's surviving forces being moved in during the Second War, the robotic beings were attacked, dissected and studied to gain an edge in battle. The once majestic cities of the ancients have been converted into Coalition refugee camps and military facilities.

Colonies Under Your Species Control: Europa (C03)

United Systems Coalition Remnants DWxGr

Although the Europa System remained the Coalition homeworld for centuries, it is no longer considered the capital of the fallen empire because the government seat was moved to XE-52. Most of the population still remains on the planet, however.

Europa V is an ice planet twice the Earth's mass and one point five its radius, generating an average surface gravity of 0.9g. Nevertheless, it has been unable to sustain any significant atmospheric pressure, which stays at 30% of Earth's sea-level pressure. This is often attributed to the extremely weak magnetic field, which allows solar wind from the nearby pulsar to strip the atmosphere layer by layer. The atmosphere is composed mainly of nitrogen (89%) with traces of oxygen (4%), ozone (2%), xenon (1%), sulfur hydride (1%), chlorine (1%) and helium (2%).

Surface temperatures vary wildly. During the day, the temperature at the equator averages at -50 Celsius and -90 C in the poles. During the night, the temperature drops to an average of -110 at the equator and -160 near the poles. These extreme variances have forced the planet's fauna to live either within the (radioactive) oceans, or underground.

Surface radiation renders life above the ice impossible. Europa V's surface receives an average of 1,000 rems every day (500 is the lethal dose for humans), and more than 10,000 rems during the pulsar's bursts, which occur randomly throughout the year. In addition, the ice itself is extremely radioactive in areas exposed to the star's light, and the water is radioactive due to the presence of a high concentration of tritium (a radioactive isotope of hydrogen).

Interestingly, liquid water exists on the frozen surface. Intense volcanic activity heats up the radioactive water and pushes it towards the surface, cracking the weakened by the temperature ice during the day. This forms rivers and lakes that freeze during the night.

Each year lasts for 387 days, and each day on Europa V is 40 hours due to its slow rotation around its axis. The length of day and night remain mostly uniform throughout the year, with the longest day being on the 217th day of the year.

Outpost: Talarin
When the Kal'bavakorians tried to invade Talarin, their fleets were shot down during re-entry using air-bursted nuclear missiles launched from mobile ICBM convoys hidden on the surface; the 'second apocalypse' on Talarin was enough to severely worsen atmospheric and weather conditions, and the slowly recovering ecosystem was wiped out overnight. Most mutant life went extinct, only for the survivors to swiftly develop mutations which allowed them to survive the harsh conditions.

The Coalition continues to maintain a heavy force on Talarin, although civilian movement is heavily restricted, and foreign governments are greeted by the same repeating message every time they approach: "DO NOT APPROACH. UNDER SPECIAL COMMAND ORDER 18885/A, THE USE OF NUCLEAR FORCE HAS BEEN AUTHORIZED. NO FURTHER WARNINGS WILL BE ISSUED."

On the surface, the USC forces battle a war against both the mutants and the transhumanist inhabitants, while their search parties scour the ruins to find technological relics.

Political System: Before the war, the Coalition was ran as a bipartisan federal republic, headed by the President. Legislation was provided by the Congress, while the Supreme Court handled judicial affairs. Unofficially, however, the Coalition was little more than a plutocracy. The Military and the megacorporations that originally settled Europa had seized almost complete control of the government using either bribes, threats or both.

During the Second War, however, the Special Operations Command staged a military coup d'etat against the civilian government. Citing the need for stability and decisiveness, General Howard declared martial law and the Chiefs of the Armed Forces assumed control of all political and military assets, using the Military Police corps to maintain the peace. Surprisingly, the coup found itself lavished with popular support.

For almost ten years, the Coalition has operated as a military junta. It is interesting to note that, legally speaking, the Coalition is still democracy and no laws have been broken: the military simply assumed emergency powers, and exercises them only to the extent where it is needed to survive the fuel crisis. Citizens continue to enjoy massive civil liberties, and many news channels openly criticize the military leadership with absolutely no consequences. If anything, corruption and rampant profiteering have subsided since the civilian government was replaced by a puppet Congress.

History:

Birth
In early 2068, in order to counter the increasing spread of Russian influence in Europe, a number of NATO nations decided to take their military and political pact one step further. NATO was united under a joint market and expanded to include several Middle East nations such as the American-occupied Iraq and Afghanistan, Israel and Egypt, and Asian nations such as the unified Republic of Korea and Japan. Over the course of several years, the organisation grew, and by 2083, it was obvious that its definition as the 'North Atlantic' Treaty Organisation didn't apply any more.

In July 4th 2085, a historic summit aboard the Freedom Space Station, a Low Earth Orbit meeting ground for the leaders of NATO, the United Systems Charter was signed by the following nations:

Albania
Argentina
Austria
Belgium
Brazil
Bulgaria
Canada
Croatia
Cyprus
Denmark
Egypt
Estonia
Finland
France
Greece
Hungary
Iran
Iraq
Ireland
Israel
Japan
(Independent Republic of) Jovian Territories
Korea
Latvia
Lithuania
Luxembourg
(Independent Republic of) Mars Territories
Malta
Netherlands
Poland
Portugal
(Republic of) Saturn
Spain
Sweden
Turkey
United Arab Emirates
United States of America

The forty nations joined in a Federal state named the United Systems Coalition, with each member-state being allowed one vote in the United Systems Assembly regardless of population or strength. All nations pledged to act in their joint interest and that of humanity, to defend themselves and each other against any threat, foreign or domestic, and to provide economic assistance for their joint development. They started using a joint currency, the Coalition Credit, which overnight grew to grab a spot at the top of the food chain. It was, after all, the coin of the majority of the major oil, helium and weapons exporters.

Over the course of the next fourty years, however, the fears of many critics were realized. A handful of economically and militarily superior nations came to dominate the United Systems Coalition, to the degree that the union became Americanized within the first decades of its existence. Arguably, this new cohesiveness was what helped it grow to become a superpower, but that very cohesiveness was what prompted many citizens of the union to leave and find their own fates.

Alarei Wars
After the Alarei war, the Coalition was left shattered. The Alarei, recognizing the Coalition's leading role in the nuclear attack against them, made sure to put great emphasis on attacking the USC's cities in Sol. The population of five billion was reduced to just five million, many of whom were suffering from advanced radiation poisoning. And so when the Alarei striked, the Coalition fled its holdings in Sol, leaving token defense forces behind for the sake of preventing looters, warlords and raiders from taking over.

The USC found a sanctuary in the Europa system. Prior to the Exodus, Europa had been a military outpost and colony with a great emphasis on Helium mining, but it soon found itself not only declared the new capital of the Coalition, but dealing with hundreds of millions of refugees, many of whom required medical attention. With a whole refugee fleet and a battered military incapable of providing the rapid construction of housing the situation required, the administration of the United Systems turned to the one species they knew they could exploit.

The Nasari.

Nasari, a native species on Europa V, had been used as slave labor illegally by the corporations on Europa for decades. Under a special executive order, however, the use of Nasari as slaves was legalized overnight, and the billions of creatures were put to work in harsh conditions in order to construct the infrastructure required to house the five hundred million refugees. Many were appalled by the blatant discarding of humanitarianism and left, creating a resistance movement that would survive for hundreds of years.

Interwar Period
Over the following three centuries, the Coalition licked its wounds, settled its citizens and begun a rapid industrialization program. It expanded to two more systems to sate the extreme demand for resources and living space, but soon, it found itself facing another adversary. The Socialist Republics of Zeleniy.

The Zeleniyans were the continuation of the Slavic states, and like their predecessors, the two sides engaged in a cold war over the resources in the systems bordering both nations. This led to a militarization of the USC, prompting it to begin amassing a massive military and a powerful fleet. But above all, it prompted it to continue development on its nuclear deterrent. From isolationist, the USC turned to interventionist, trying to stop the spread of communism (officially). For decades, the SRZ and the USC remained in a state of cold war, always on the brink of going nuclear on each-other.

Coup d'etat
The fuel crisis, sparked by the dwindling Helium-3 reserves of the Tefeull asteroid field, forced the Coalition on the offensive. With its reserve forces activated, the Coalition military forces invaded Talarin, XE-52 and Tefeull, fighting a brutal fight against the Kal'bavakorians and the New Terran Empire in the later until they were forced to retreat to their own sector of the asteroid field with few territorial gains. For almost a decade the Coalition's economy continued to collapse, and many mega-corporations found themselves willing to sell out to the military or face ruin.

Military analysts foresaw the second war, but the civilian government was unwilling to act against the mounting Helium-3 sanctions imposed on it by the other nations. After years of indecision, the 19th of April 2451 was marked by a coup d'etat. General Robert Howard, the commanding officer of the Special Operations Command, along with several key military officials and with the help of the Central Intelligence Agency, declared nation-wide martial law. Tanks and mechs flowed out into the streets, but despite the massive mobilization of military power, the coup was bloodless: only two people died throughout the coalition, and that was due to a traffic accident between a tank and a civilian car.

With massive popular support behind him, General Howard appointed former Secretary of Defense Roger Harding as the new President. Former President of the USC Marie Oppenheimer found herself in jail, having been found guilty of high treason in a swift court martial that looked more like a kangaroo trial than a serious judiciary process.

Second Stellar War
A new policy of 'zero tolerance' was implemented by the military in its foreign relations: the Coalition made absolutely no effort to find a diplomatic solution to the fuel crisis, instead invading several prospective Helium asteroid fields in a blitzkrieg attack. Similarly, it shut off access to Tefeull to all but a few select allies, namely the UCFP, the GCS and the Familiar, denying all other nations permission to approach the planet.

Deep beneath the ruins of Talarin, the Coalition sought to find a solution to its plights: the key to controlled antimatter reactions, which the USC had only managed to harness as nuclear weapons. Seeking the same thing, the Kal'bavakorians invaded the system. For weeks, the massive Coalition fleet, lead by the warship USS Avenger, defended the entire planetary system from the Alliance; it was then that fuel reserves went critical, and in order to safeguard the massive military investment that went into building the gargantuan vessels of the Coalition, the USC fleet withdrew to XE-52.

With their own fleet similarly strained of fuel, the Kal'bavakorian invasion failed miserably: for years, the Coalition had moved several Army divisions on Talarin, along with a large fraction of its nuclear stockpile. Once the invasion ships entered the atmosphere, ICBMs launched from hundreds of sites on the surface air-burst several kilometers above the ground; the resulting shockwaves shattered any chances of safe re-entry, and the few ships that managed to escape the heat blasts were met with the stunning effects of the electromagnetic pulse. The Coalition kept Talarin, although the surface was blasted with even more radiation than it had during the Alarei Wars.

Taking the invasion attempt on Talarin as a declaration of war, the Coalition was swift to exercise its counter-attack: with no fuel reserves to wage an assault, it launched its nuclear weaponry against all known Kal'bavakorian colonies, blasting some of the most populous cities out of existence. At the same time, the military attempted to keep its promises to the UCFP by devoting forces and material to the SRZ-UCFP war, but the involvement came mainly in the form of advisers and military equipment.

Over the next few months, the war with the Kal'bavakorians and New Terrans drained the last of the USC's fuel reserves, and it steadily begun to lose ground: it was pushed all the way to its home system, and the government was moved to XE-52 in the event that Europa was lost.

The last attack never came, however: the New Terrans and the Kal'bavakorians simply did not have the resources to fight, and thus, the war ended. Even though the Coalition's own cities came under attack from nuclear weapons, they suffered two different fates: the people of Europa continued their lives as regular, as the underground bunkers in which they lived saved them from the nuclear onslaught. But the Chicago and Washington systems were lost to the nuclear fire.

Remnants
With its military power decimated, not through a lack of hardware but through a fuel shortage, the Coalition chose to withdraw from the galactic scene. The Coalitions last two worlds, Europa and XE-52 (renamed 'Oscar') saw a steady outflow of refugees fleeing to the UCFP as the United Systems' economy fell into disarray. Less than a third of the original population remains today, thanks to both the one hundred million lives lost in the war and the refugee movement.

The government adopted an isolationist policy: contact with most nations was cut, save for maintaining some relations with its former allies. The Nasari population was culled to a more manageable size, and the resistance movement was quelled out of sheer fear: the death of two billion Nasari had proven to the survivors that the Coalition was not joking around.

Having lost the capacity to fuel the Hydra station, the Coalition was forced to permanently anchor the facility in orbit around XE-52, serving as a defensive station and government headquarters all at once. Hydra has since served as the seat of the President and the Joint Chiefs of Staff, although the horrific research of the CIA and SPECCOM continues aboard its myriads of laboratories. At the same time, Talarin was further fortified, and a small fleet was assigned to protect it; nevertheless, its defense relies more on the ground-based nuclear missile launchers, ready to take out any invasion force and trigger a third Armageddon.

With XE-52 serving as its new capital, the Coalition has been swift to take over the planet: the robotic life forms that protected the massive cities beneath the ocean have mostly been eradicated and dissected for a technological edge, ironically granting the USC what it had been seeking all along: the means to produce a fully automated military. The prototype fighters and ground combat robots have evolved greatly since the Second War.

National Holidays

February 18th - Ceasefire Day
The day that marked the end of the Second Stellar War. It is viewed less as a celebration and more of a day of mourning; flags are flown at half-mast from 00:00 to 00:00 the next day. During the same day, the people of the USC remember Admiral Huxley's sacrifice, and a minute of silence is held at exactly 13:28, marking the moment the USS Hastings was declared destroyed by the USS Enterprise's computer. A military parade in the morning is followed by several events organized by the Navy to honor those lost in the war.

Last Monday of May - Memorial Day

July 4th - Coalition Day
Aside from being the Day of Independence for the United States, July 4th is also the day on which the United Systems Coalition Charter was signed by the forty nations that later became the USC. It is a day of celebration, and the White House becomes open to visitors during this day with no charge.

August 9th - USS George Washington Rememberance Day
'Never forget, never again.' A day dedicated to remembering the terrorist attack on the USS George Washington, CVN-79. Flags are flown at half-mast and the fleet flagship travels to the area where the Washington was destroyed so the President, the Chiefs of the Armed Forces and the Secretary of Defense can pay their respects to the wreckage. It could be compared to a modern 9/11.

September 19th - Victory Day
On September 19th, 2143, the United Nations declared victory over the Alarei Imperium. Three centuries later, the people of the United Systems celebrate the final victory over the alien enemies. Xenophobia runs amock on September 19th, and hostility against the Nasari peaks at noon, around the time when Admiral Roger Hendricks gave his famous speech on human-wide television. "We have squashed the pestilence that had been growing in our back yard, and we have avenged our fallen brethren. Now all I ask for is the forgiveness of humanity for not having nuked the bastards sooner."

November 11th - Veterans Day

December 26th - Black Wednesday
A day of mourning for the fifteen billion lost in the nuclear fires of the Alarei War. All flags are flown at half-mast for the duration of the day and citizens pay their respects to the Holocaust Memorial in Washington, DC. Many people travel to Earth in that week to drop flowers on the irradiated ruins.

Uniforms

Officer Service Uniform
A comfortable BDU for use by officers of all departments of the United Systems Military. Comes in Navy Blue, Army Green, Air Force Olive Drab and Special Operations Black.

Battle Dress Uniform
A uniform for use by enlisted personnel or officers when needed. Comes in all available camouflage patterns, and can be mounted with a ballistic vest, groin guard, limb guards and MOPP gloves.

Service Dress Uniform
Ceremonial and formal uniforms worn by the staff of the United Systems Military.

Deck Work Uniform
Worn by service crews, engineers and deckhands.

Body Armor

GUARDIAN Combat Vest: A Ballistic Protection Level V qualified vest by Pinnacle Armor, in wide use by PMCs, corporate security and civilians.

CBT-30 Combat Armor: Some areas and situations, such as the interiors of cramped ships and bases, do not allow for the constant use of power armor. That's where the CBT-30 comes in: it is a standard security uniform used almost exclusively by Naval Security and some Marine units, and while it is considered inferior to all power armor models, its agility is appreciated by special operators.

CBT-50X Environmental Combat Armor: Combining the strength of myomer-propelled power armor and the agility of the CBT-30, the CBT-50X is a fast, agile and light suit of semi-powered armor that is used by special operations agents and Marines alike in time-sensitive missions. It is fully environmentally sealed and contains an internal oxygen supply that can, under standard conditions, keep its user alive for two days, while it also accepts extra canisters.

CBT-60 Environmental Combat Armor: An unpowered military combat armor with environmental seals for up to 72 hours of continuous protection against hazardous environments, the CBT-60 is most often used with an external exoskeleton mount.

Mark II Extravehicular Activity Suit: A military grade spacesuit used for spacewalks, hull repair and other low-risk operations, and is often used with a load-bearing exoskeleton to mount additional radiation shielding for working in the deadly vacuum of the Europa system. Its kevlar-woven exterior, along with a hardened helmet and titanium armor vest helm protect the user from shrapnel. When modified with an exoskeleton, combat chassis, radiation shielding, shock dampening assembly and survival kit, it becomes the Mark III Endo-Exo Vehicular Flight Suit or the Mark IV All-Environment Combat Suit if the undersuit is replaced with a ballistic carbon fiber jumpsuit with an additional ballistic layer.

Powered Exoskeletons

General Dynamics Land Systems Mark X Exoskeleton: With the release of the Mark X in the late 2430s, GDLS ensured its dominance over the field of combat exoskeletons. The modular frame and powerful fusion reactor provide an unprecedented amount of lifting capacity, and any amount of extra armor, weapons, gear or additional power sources can be mounted on it.

GDLS PA-18 Powered Infantry Armor
A twenty-year-old power armor design mass produced by General Dynamics Land Systems. The PA-18 is being slowly phased out of service in favour of the upgraded PA-22, but it remains in the arsenals of several PMCs and various other non-government entities. It introduced the concept of small teams instead of massive advances, as a single squad of troops in PA-18 armor could wipe out entire towns or military bases.

GDLS PA-18 MKII Enhanced Power Armor
Even though most of the armed forces are transitioning to the PA-22, the Special Operations branch funded a program to modernize the PA-18 for its operators. The result was a somewhat agile but still powerful armoured exoskeleton.

GDLS PA-22 Advanced Powered Infantry Armor
The 'next step in infantry combat', as described by the CEO of General Dynamics during his landmark speech following the first demonstration of the PA-22, this suit of armor was introduced two years ago into the United Systems Marine Corps and has since replaced 50% of the stocks of the armed forces. It improves on every aspect of the PA-18, including better armor and an electronic suite, but its top speed has been reduced by 20%.

Pinnacle 'PATRIOT' Combat Exoskeleton:

? ? ?

Camouflage Patterns

Digital Woodland (A)
A randomized pattern fitting with the colouration of jungles and forests.

URBCAM
An urban camouflage pattern based on shades of gray.

Digital Navy (NAVPAT)
Camouflage worn by almost all Navy officers during maritime duty. Also, most ships are painted in this pattern.

'Ice' (ICECAM)
With almost 10% of the armed forces taking regular trips to the surface of Europa, snow camouflage is vital.

UEDPAT-1 / UEDPAT-2
The Urban Environment Disruptive Pattern is a new addition to the Coalition's arsenal of camouflage designed by the Europa Institute of Technology for the Special Operations Command.

Sidearms, Submachineguns

Colt 2311 Service Pistol
Standard issue service pistol. Used by soldiers and PMCs throughout the Coalition thanks to its strength and reliability.

SIG P320
Deadly .50 caliber pistol. Very expensive.

AR-3 Submachinegun: A modular submachinegun in wide use by pilots, PMCs and police forces.

Carbines, Assault Rifles, Battle Rifles

H&K G12 Battle Rifle
Decade-old railgun, but nevertheless standard issue in the armed forces. Powerful, but can not fire automatic or burst.

Nexter 'Arme de Combat de la Manufacture d'Armes de Saint-Étienne'
The Nexter 'ACMAS' is the space-age version of the FAMAS, manufactured in the Saint-Étienne Memorial Army Plant deep beneath the surface of Europa. It is a very capable selective-fire rail rifle.

SIG SG-620
Built with the unmatched quality of SIG rifles, the SG-620 is a powerful .50 caliber battle rifle that can immobilize jeeps, aircraft or even weaker tanks. SIG remains the only corporation so far to supply the Coalition with a .50 caliber battle rifle.

FN SCAR MK37
The FN SCAR Mk37 is a special operations battle rifle available in 5.56 (MOD 0), 7.62 (MOD 1) and .50 caliber (MOD 2) variants. A very expensive railgun to produce, but it makes up for the cost with its excellent performance in all environments.

BAE Systems SA40
The SA40 (Small Arms for the 40s) is a BAE manufactured combat carbine that fires the 5.56x45mm railgun cartridge.

Izhmash Kalashnikov AK-32
The 2358 version of the Kalashnikov is not officially used by any branches of the military, but is the weapon of choice of gangsters and outlaws throughout the coalition due to its cheap build.

Marksman Rifles, Anti-Materiel Rifles

Barrett G82 Anti-Materiel Rifle
A destructive .50 caliber anti-materiel weapon manufactured by Barrett. Its internal antimatter power source turns each bullet into a miniature cannon shell.

Colt S12 Anti-Tank Rifle
Bordering on being classified a cannon, the Colt S12 fires a 20mm HEIAP shell capable of crippling tanks in a few shots. A very rare weapon.

H&K 'Lambda'
An unconventional rifle, the 'Lambda' fires 7.62x51mm antipersonnel rounds, and is fully automatic.

Izhmash Snayperskaya Vintovka Dragunova 2336
The Izhmash Dragunov Sniper Rifle 36 (SVD-36) is an advanced sniper rifle that rellies on pinpoint accuracy instead of the superior firepower of its competitors. Using the computerized targeting systems, untrained civilians have managed to break colonial records in marksmanship. It fires the proprietary 7.62x54mmG guided projectile.

Light/Medium/Utility Vehicles
General Motors M110 Extreme Mobility Vehicle
The M110 EMVe, called the 'Emvy'  and nicknamed the 'Humvee' due to its resemblance to the 20th century vehicle of the same name, is a multipurpose light vehicle built by General Motors after it acquired AT General in the late 2310s. Introduced into service in 2316, the EMVe is completely sealed from the outside and has the air supply to keep six occupants alive for a week. Light electric reactive armor protects it from small arms fire.

GDLS M137 'Hornet' Extreme Mobility Armoured Personnel Carrier
General Dynamics Land Systems developed the M137 in secret under orders from the USM Special Operations Command, and remains the only vehicle in the USM to operate on a hydrogen combustion engine. While this gives it lower autonomy, as the other vehicles can go for weeks without refueling, the Hornet is not built for long missions. It is a rapid insertion and extraction vehicle, and that is made clear by the rocket boosters on the front, back and underside of the Hornet. It can make jumps across terrain, or accelerate and deccelerate rapidly.

BAE Systems M221 'Lima' Infantry Fighting Vehicle
The Lima is a hybrid between an IFV and an APC, sacrificing some of its armor for mobility and crew capacity. Its main weapon is its 40mm Coil Anti-Tank Cannon, a heavy armor-piercing weapon that allows it to provide covering fire even against enemy tanks. The M2/R .50 caliber railgun mounted near the hatch can support troops at almost any range.

M51A1 'Badger'/ M51A2 'Superbadger'
The General Motors M51 series is best known for just how modular it is. An M51A1 APC can be turned into either an M51A2 IFV or an M51A2/A tank destroyer in just under an hour, thanks to compartmentalized systems and the ease with which parts can be exchanged.

M578A1 Tank Destroyer / M578B1 MLRS / M578C1 APC / M578D1 Howitzer

M648A1 Mobile Artillery System / M648B1 RRT Vehicle / M648C1 Fuel Tanker / M648M3 Field Hospital / M648X1 TELAR

Heavy Vehicles, Main Battle Tanks

M65 'Hellfire'
Designed and built by General Dynamics Land Systems, the Hellfire is a slow moving artillery tank specializing in medium and long range missile attacks.

M77A1 'Mammoth'/ M77A2 'Rex'
The Krauss-Maffei M77 series is the bread and butter of the United Systems Armoured Core, and has been in service for over two decades. It is slowly being replaced by the M80 series, but the Army does not expect the tank to become obsolete for over two more decades. The distinctive characteristic of the M77 is its dual cannons.

M80A1 'Sherman'/ M80A2 'Hammer'
General Motors has attempted for decades to take the crown from the M77 series of main battle tank, and it has succeeded with the M80. Although very expensive, and only equipped with a single cannon, the M80's innovations come from its antimatter reactor. The reactor gives it enough energy to power the 'siege cannon', as it has been nicknamed, which can cause crippling damage even to the toughest of tanks and mechs.

Krauss-Maffei M-X 'Tiger'
Named after the legendary Tiger tank, the Krauss-Maffei M-X is undoubtedly the king of the battlefield. It has even been known to cripple Titan heavy mechs with a single salvo of its weapons. The characteristics remain a tightly guarded secret, but it is known that its main cannon has a caliber in excess of 300mm.

All-Terrain Combat Vehicles (Mechs)

GDLS RM-03 'Orion'
A light, agile mech from General Dynamics Land Systems, the Orion is often used to scout out enemy positions or relay targeting information to Ballista and Longbow mechs.

GDLS SM-04 'Guardian'
A mech primarily used for police duties, the unit can operate autonomously or with a human crew.

HM-05 'Ballista'/ Krauss-MaffeiAM-05 'Longbow'
Krauss-Maffei developed the Ballista and Longbow battlemechs as a second-line indirect support platform. The first weights 90 tons without ammo, while the second 150. They represent a clever solution to the vulnerability of mech legs, even though those are vital to access difficult terrain; never present the legs to the enemy. The two mechs can rain down missiles onto the enemy with extreme prejudice.

Krauss-Maffei BM-07 'Rifleman'
A 90 ton beast, the Rifleman's firepower is concentrated into its two 'arms', each of which can be mounted with almost any ballistic weapon in existance. The most common variant, the BM-07/CQC, mounts a pair of 100mm anti-tank guns and 20mm gatlings. The Rifleman so far remains the only mech to be capable of mounting experimental laser weapons, although very few variants do so.

Krauss-Maffei AM-15 'Titan'
The 200 ton, 20 meter tall Titan is the product of decades of research by Krauss-Maffei. Built to shrug off direct hits from all but the most damaging anti-tank guns, and packing enough firepower to wipe out entire tank columns, the Titan is a very rare mech, due to the extreme cost of the logistics behind its deployment.

Aerospace Superiority Vehicles

Lockheed Martin F-18/E 'Cobra' Strike Fighter
The Cobra is a fourty-year old fighter design that has been rendered obsolete by advancements in the field of armor and weaponry. Nevertheless, it remains the Coalition's fastest and most agile fighter available, and the vast warehouses filled to the brim with the machines mean that as long as there are pilots to fly them, the Coalition can afford to send wave after wave of them against the enemy. They are most effective inside a planet's atmosphere, where their airplane-like design allows them to take advantage of air resistance instead of fighting against it. Even in 2442, hundreds of Cobra pilots graduate from the United Systems Air Force Academy every year. The F-18/E is the newest and most modernized edition of the craft, upgrading the outdated F-18/D.

Dassault Mirage 3000 Strike Fighter
Not much is known about the Mirage 3000 other than that it is an experimental fighter, or that it is designed by Dassault.

Lockheed Martin F-38/A 'Raptor' Strike Fighter
Brand new from Lockheed Martin's New Meryland facility underneath the ice of Europa, the F-38 was advertised as being the first fighter in 30 years to be built using exclusively paid human labour. The reason for that isn't patriotism, however. The F-38 represents thirty years of top secret research in the field of aerospace superiority, and has already cost the government more than the development of every other asset in the past century combined. With a staggering cost of six hundred million credits per unit, many doubted the need for the F-38 to even exist. The doubts were silenced, however, during field trials. A single squadron of F-38 fighters managed to not only destroy ten squadrons of the older F-18s, but to complete the objective and extract with zero casualties. Lockheed instantly won the contract. The secret behind the F-38's success is quite simple. The F-38 uses a single relativistic autocannon. The projectiles travel at 0.1% the speed of light, and, despite weighting a single gram, they hit with enough energy to tear off wings and alter the course of the enemy ship significantly. The problem is that the F-38 does not have the energy to sustain this weapon for long, and so it needs to recharge between bursts.

Lockheed Martin F-38/R 'Raptor UCAV' Autonomous Joint Strike Fighter
After the successful deployment of the Mirage 3001 'Predator' UCAV, Lockheed was swift to copy the technology that allowed the networked fighter drones to function: it took several years of corporate espionage, original research, and a touch of alien technology acquired from XE-52 and Talarin, but eventually Lockheed managed to produce the F-38/R version of its Raptor. Nicknamed 'Roboraptor' by the grunts, the F-38/R is a larger, better armored and well-equipped alternative to the M-3001 and its later upgrades. But, knowing that the military needed more than that to upgrade, Lockheed sweetened the pot: the Roboraptor includes a hydrogen combustion engine in addition to a fusion reactor, allowing it to run on conventional hydrogen fuel, an endless resource, at the cost of drastically reduced autonomy: the fighters need refueling every few hours.

Lockheed Martin FA-37 'Talon' Stealth Fighter
While the F-18 and F-38 duked it out to determine if the F-38 was worth the cost, the United Systems Air Force stealthily introduced the FA-37 Stealth Fighter into its arsenal. Faster than the F-38 but slower than the F-18, its main feature is its ability to 'disappear' from sensors using an advanced suite of electronics, heatsinks and disruptive coating. Squadrons of these fighters have been known to sneak past enemy lines undetected, destroying entire airfields or hunting down enemy cargo transports before anyone even noticed them.

Tactical Bombers, Strategic Bombers

Boeing F-5 'Eagle' Fighter-Bomber
The decade-old fighter-bomber focuses heavily on the delivery of conventional explosives on vulnurable ships, or the precision bombing of airfields and tactical targets. Nevertheless, it is very much capable of the delivery of nuclear warheads, if the mission requires it, and some of the craft have been modified with ports to facilitate the deployment of target painters for nukes.

Boeing B-23 'Raven' Stratobomber
One bomber to rule them all. The FTL-capable Raven is capable of maintaining its stealth for days, navigating its way around enemy strongholds and defensive perimeters. Once it is in place, all is lost: it can carry enough nuclear warheads to level a few countries, or destroy a dreadnought. Its speed leaves much to be desired, however, and the FTL drive requires long cooldowns before being able to jump again.

Utility Spacecraft

Boeing CH-48 'Chetco' VTOL
The Boeing CH-48 is named after the people of Chetco, a native Oregon tribe, and is the space capable offspring of the CH-47 Chinook. It is an ancient vehicle, having served in almost every war in the past fourty years, and many of them are used as civilian cargo transports. Up to two main battle tanks, or fourty troops, can fit comfortably inside the hold of a CH-48. It is powered by a fusion reactor and uses a Buzzard scoop to collect reaction mass, giving it an almost unlimited range. Sometimes, the transports are refitted with an FTL drive to ferry cargo between systems.

Boeing AH-12 'Slingshot' Gunship / Boeing AH-16 'Overlord' Ground Attack Craft
The Slingshot is the exact opposite of the Chetco. Agile and armed, it is meant to provide cover for ground troops with a huge arsenal of weaponry, such as rail cannons, missiles and artillery turrets. It can carry a small squad of marines inside it, for rapid deployments, and is fueled by hydrogen fuel cells to give it unparalleled agility when it comes to assault gunships. The Overlord takes that concept one step further, reducing its crew capacity to just a pilot and gunnery operator in favor of a built-in bomb bay and increased weapon payload.

Bell UH-77 'Inuit' Gunship
The UH-77 is named after the Canadian Inuit, part of Canadian heritage in the USC, and is built as a force insertion craft. Its missile pods can clear the path for ground forces to land in, and its railgun can devastate other dropships in dogfights. It is faster and more agile than the Chetco, and can be fitted with an FTL drive to allow it to travel faster than light.

Bell UH-78 'Huey' The Bell UH-78 is a multi-role gunship designed to function as a 'jack of all trades, master of none' for ships and facilities that lack the capacity to carry specialized ships for every task. Its modular 'pod space' system allows everything from weapons, to ECM, to torpedoes to additional passenger seats. It has an FTL drive by default, although it can be removed to save weight and pod space.

Northrop Grumman EC-180 Compass
Originally, the EC-180 was designed to counter the use of the Zeleniyan 'Houndeye' electronic warfare vessel. They are unique in their use of two primary engine pods, each housing a SABRE endo-exo atmospheric jet engine and an antimatter-catalyzed fusion nuclear thermal rocket to enable both atmospheric and space flight with a smooth transition between atmo and orbit, but a single 'COLJEFE, as pronounced by the French company that designed it. The Cold-Jet Fusion Engine is little more than a nuclear thermal rocket, but the exhaust fluid is supercooled constantly by passing through a refrigeration loop in order to eliminate the craft's heat signature. Waste heat is stored in high capacity heatsinks and vented at the first opportunity. The craft is equipped with a vast array of electronic equipment and, when fully staffed, has a crew of twelve aboard. The EC-180/N variant is a strategic command vessel, with only six of them in existence: three of the craft are always in space at any given moment with a full Emergency Command Authority Board aboard, which includes a representative of the Secretary of Defense, two USAF four-star generals, a Military Intelligence general and a Navy admiral. They can authorize nuclear counter-attacks from the depth of space in the event that the command authority on Europa is killed or incapacitated in an enemy first strike.

Fleet Composition

Carrier Strike Group 01
USS Avenger (SXN-01) - Flagship (Titan)
USS Charon (SXBN-07) - Battleship
USS Nemesis (SXBN-09) - Battleship
USS Reaper (SXCN-12) - Carrier [MOTHBALLED]

Carrier Strike Group 02
USS Hastings (CVN-88) - Supercarrier
USS Valiant (SSN-65) - Dreadnought
USS George W. Bush (SSGN-189) - Battleship [MOTHBALLED]

Carrier Strike Group 03

USS Enterprise (CVN-91) - Supercarrier
USS California (SSN-73) - Dreadnought
USS William T. Sherman (SSGN-201) - Battleship [MOTHBALLED]

Unregistered Vessel
USS Prometheus (SSX-01) - Advanced Destroyer

Racial Benefit: Supercarrier Doctrine

[MOTHBALLED]
Due to the devastating fuel shortage, the Coalition can not afford to maintain its entire fleet in active duty. Many ships were MOTHBALLED: they were moved to well defended orbital storage facilities and stripped of most munitions, including almost all of their nuclear arsenal. Their reactors were powered down, and even though they are well guarded and have a permanent maintenance crew, they are not battle ready.

(Equivalent to 'Under Construction')

Class: Saratoga
Type: Capital
Chassis Type: Aircraft Carrier, Nuclear (CVN)
Manufacturer: Boeing Aerospace
Operator: United Systems Navy

Carlin: 3853m
Beam: 1208m

The mobile home of every Carrier Strike group, the Saratoga class represents the pinnacle of United Systems engineering. With a length of 3853m, each Saratoga-class super carrier takes a little more than a year and fifty billion credits to build. They are armoured beasts built much like bunkers, compartmentalized to absurdity. Every possible measure has been taken to protect the ship's crew and the valuable equipment inside. The main reactor has almost four hundred meters of armor protecting it on either side, including the decks near and around it which serve as makeshift 'cushions' to safeguard the entire ship from a reactor breach. CIC is located inside the gigantic alligator head structure, deep within the armor plating, and can withstand direct hits from nuclear weapons.

Each Saratoga supercarrier is a mobile hospital, staging ground, troop transport, repair ship and battleship all in one. Although its main weapon is the Carrier Air Wing, a massive collection of fighters and VTOLs, the Saratoga also combines the firepower of conventional battleships with the nuclear warheads of a ballistic missile cruiser.

Active Ships
USS Saratoga (CVN-76/CSG-1)
USS Enterprise (CVN-91/CSG-3)

In Memoriam
USS George Washington (CVN-79) - "Never forget, never again." is the phrase most often associated with the loss of the USS George Washington, the Coalition's 'missing link' between the Saratoga and the Hastings. Commissioned in 2425, the USS George Washington was the leading ship of the 3rd Carrier Strike Group, at the time guarding the Coalition's holdings in the Tefeull asteroid field. In 2427, a group of 'Liberation Front' radicals campaigning for Nasari freedom managed to steal a Huey utility craft (Exxon Huey 3878-ME) used for mining operations equipped with a handful of nuclear excavation charges. Under the guise of a propulsion system failure, the Huey was granted permission to land on the carrier for emergency repairs.

The resulting detonation had a yield of almost twenty kilotons in TNT-equivalence, a yield comparable to the nuclear bombing of Nagasaki on August 9, 1945. The entire starboard flight pods were annihilated in the first seconds of the blast, and the debris, combined with the extreme temperatures and pressures, managed to breach a gigantic section along the starboard side of the ship. The fire suppression systems were unable to keep up, and most decks in the starboard half of the Washington, including the aviation fuel tanks, were engulfed in fire. The secondary explosions of the starboard aviation fuel tank, ammunition storage and RCS reaction mass tanks finally cracked the superstructure, causing a twelve meter wide rift that reached the reactor compartment. Despite efforts to SCRAM the fusion core, the ship was lost with all hands at 18:27 of August the 9th, 2427. Of the 18,981 crew members, Marines and pilots, only 96 survived due to either not being on the carrier at the time (such as the pilots of the Combat Air Patrol) or managing to reach the escape pods. The gigantic loss of life is attributed to a loss of power in vast sections of the ship, sealing blast doors and trapping the crew.

Within an hour, the entire Coalition military had been placed on full alert, and the readiness condition was elevated to DEFCON 2 for the first time in almost a century. The Coalition's national pride took a gigantic hit on that fateful day, and less than a week later, then-president Richards announced the commencement of the Coalition's own War on Terror, culminating in the invasion of Chicago VI. The aftermath of the incident had, perhaps, the opposite result to what the terrorists intended: it put the Coalition on the route to massive militarization and put an end to efforts to disarm, and allowed the government to pass several measures to curb terrorism. It was about that time that the Special Operations Command begun Project Avenger and acquired the powers that would have been deemed unconstitutional by any court.

USS Hastings (CVN-88) - The Hastings, affectionately nicknamed 'Super Second' in reference to its age in the 'holy triad' of supercarriers that served the United Systems during the Second Stellar War, fought dozens of battles during the brief war between the Coalition, the Kal'bavakorian Alliance and the New Terran Imperium. Most notably, the Hastings fought in the Battle of the Periphery, the final confrontation between the three forces that took place just three lightyears away from the United Systems homeworld of Europa, also known as the first and last battle of the war in which the entirety of the Coalition fleet participated. It was also when the Hastings was destroyed, although many debate about whether it was the last casualty of the war or not.

The end of the Hastings begun when a Kal'bavakorian nuclear warhead that managed to navigate through the thick defense zone of the USS Enterprise, the 'youngest' ship in the family of supercarriers, managed to critically damage the latter's faster than light drives. Without its jump drives, the Enterprise could not ran away as its flak munitions begun to run out, and it became a sitting target for the swarms of Kal'bavakorian frigates that tried to pick off the weakest member of the Coalition battlegroup. After almost half an hour of fighting, the Coalition's ships received the order to jump out and regroup in low Europa orbit; the Enterprise would have to be left behind. With its escape bays damaged beyond use during the battle, the crew was all but doomed to die.

The Hastings' commander, Vice Admiral Kelly Huxley, refused to allow the Enterprise be destroyed. With the rest of the fleet jumping away, she instructed all non-essential crew to head to the escape craft and jump to safety, and then turned over control of all ship functions to the artificial intelligence in a clear breach of protocol. Only the ship's command officers, some engineers, a pair of Marines and a handful of pilots were left aboard to fight against two enemy fleets. And fight they did: for over an hour, the Hastings acted as a divine shield for the Enterprise, taking hit after hit that was meant for the dead-in-the-water warship. When the report came in that one of the Enterprise's jump drives was repaired and spooling for a jump, the Admiral ordered the last few of her people to get in a dropship and head to the Enterprise, had the fighter pilots make an emergency landing on the repaired carrier and assumed control of the helm.

In one final act of bravery, and just as the Enterprise finished rerouting power to its jump systems, the Admiral set a collision course for the enemy flagship and launched every last missile in her arsenal at nearby vessels, only to activate the self destruct on the main reactor and overload the jump drive. With its dying breath, the Hastings took out two enemy battleships and a frigate. One minute after that, the Enterprise jumped to safety. Seven hours later, the United Systems Coalition, the Kal'bavakorian Alliance and the New Terran Imperium declared an end to hostilities.

Admiral Huxley's last words have been reported as "Tell my son that I love him. Huxley over and out."

Vice Admiral Huxley was posthumously promoted to the rank of Admiral, and was awarded the Medal of Honor. She was survived by her son, Marine Aviator Major Tom Huxley. February 18th, the last day of the war and the day of the Hasting's destruction, is a national day of mourning. Three years ago, Admiral Kelly Huxley was declared a national hero, and her name was engraved on the Plaque of Remembrance outside the White House.

Today, the Admiral Kelly Huxley Foundation, named for the late Admiral, is a non-profit organization that provides support for the families of Navy staff that were lost during their service to the United Systems. The Foundation also organizes events to raise support for the US Navy, and awards scholarships to promising Marine, Air Force or Navy pilots that wish to work towards a career in Warship Command.

United Systems Coalition Remnants 2moLe

Class: Valiant
Type: Capital
Chassis Type: Dreadnought, Nuclear (SSN)
Manufacturer: Boeing Aerospace
Operator: United Systems Navy

Carlin: 3562m
Beam: 1002m

There is no ship deadlier than the dreadnought, and the Valiant class is designed around that very principle.

The entire ship is designed as a massive railgun, surrounded by armor, support systems, an engine and weapons. The ERAS, or Extreme Range Artillery System, is a gigantic rail acceleration cannon that spans the entire length of the Valiant class starting from the engine department and ending at the front of the alligator head. The car-sized projectiles it is capable of firing carry the kinetic energy of a small nuclear weapon, and while they have to be fired in short 'salvos', each salvo can wreck a city or another ship. Of course, the ship has to be aligned almost perfectly with the target, as the maximum angle at which the weapon can be fired is, at close ranges, 1 or 2 degrees, at medium ranges 4 to 6 degrees, long ranges 6 to 10 degrees and 20 degrees at extreme range, thanks to maneuvering thrusters built into the projectiles themselves which allow them to 'arc' towards the enemy.

In the meantime, the fighter force stationed aboard and the myriads of weapons mounted on the hull can provide consistent firepower even at odd angles.

Alien, please check the new fleet requirements. Your fleet is too large and, being a species that fought in the war, your fleet size would be dramatically lowered regardless.
