Regarding ATS.

When I was asked to join up I wasn't aware there'd be so many 'ats is dying again' threads. Is there anything I should be aware of in terms of activity or ATS' survival as a whole? Is there use in me writing and participating or is it a lost cause?

Well you've arrived after a two month dip in activity which is just now starting to be reversed, although we certainly don't have the level of activity we used to but we've still got enough dedicated to keep it afloat.

Superior and Blitz don't post much and I assume they're busy but when they do we should be able to keep things flowing pretty well although I'd advise to invite as many people you think would be interested as possible.

Either way, if the current trend holds you should certainly be able to participate effectively although there isn't much room for variety in your empire interactions but that shouldn't be too much of a problem.

Dude you're a reservist, you will never know they pain of motor pool operations on rainy Monday.
